Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel
Year 4 Day 117
“Education for reverence, the development of a sense of awe and mystery, is a prerequisite for the preservation of freedom. We must learn how to bridle the outrageous presumption of modern man, to cultivate a sense of wonder and reverence, to develop an awareness that something is asked of man.”(Insecurity of Freedom pg21)
The sentence in bold above says it all, in my humble opinion, and it is a lesson that was first taught to us in the Garden of Eden, then again after the flood, then again with Jacob’s ‘unbridled’ desire to con his brother and never truly make amends, to the Israelites who went along with their enslavement in Egypt because they couldn’t believe it was really happening. The lesson continues with Mount Sinai, the 40 years in the wilderness because, ostensibly, because of our refusal to ‘bridle the outrageous presumption” of the newly freed slaves, and up until today. It is truly amazing that humankind just will not be tamed, we seem to be incapable of having a “bridle” put on us so we can restrain our impulse to do what we want to do, whenever we want to do it, no matter whom it many harm. Looking at the Bible and everything in history since does point to this being an issue with humankind since our beginnings.
What is the “outrageous presumption” of human beings? While I do not pretend to know exactly what Rabbi Heschel means, I do believe that the most “outrageous presumption of modern man” is our erroneous belief that we are in control and we can reason out everything, from the workings of the universe to the workings of the human mind and emotions-thereby controlling people and manipulating people to do our will rather than what is in their best interests. The “outrageous presumption” of today’s autocrats is that the people will just go along with them until it is too late for them to rebel, too late to ‘stop the train’ of their taking of absolute power and then We the People will be impotent to do anything and we will start the 4th Reich, as Project 2025 and Trump’s Presidency is sometimes referred to. This “outrageous presumption” that some human beings can do anything they want and there will be no consequences is, unfortunately being proven true by Trump’s co-conspirators, by the Judicial System, by the Congress because of ‘party loyalty’-not facts, not truth, not fulfilling their sworn oaths to “protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America”! This is the work of PAGANS as David Brooks calls them in his op-ed from Friday’s New York Times. It is the work of the IDOLATORS at our gates in the form of the “prosperity gospel” liars, the Paula Cain-White charlatans, the money-grabbing, power-hungry Russell Vought’s and Project 2025ers who have totally captured the small mindedness of the MAGA crowd. By small mindedness, I am speaking to the inability to hold two opposing thoughts in one’s being in the same moment, I am speaking to the oversimplification and need to have a bad guy, living as “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”, etc.
The “outrageous presumption” of our current situation is best summed up in the ‘joke’ of an A I generated photo of Trump as Pope, which he circulated on his social media site. While his defenders, his ass-kissing, cabinet, VP, and defenders are having a good time with making fun of the people who find it abhorrent that Trump would disgrace the Papacy, the process of the Conclave, the Church with such a tone-deaf post when Pope Francis was just buried, the truth is they are boors, bullies, and believe they can disrespect anyone they want to because of their “outrageous presumption” of their superiority and their power! Wonder, reverence, something being asked of them is so far out of their ken, their understanding of their exalted position in the scheme of life, they would laugh if someone brought these ideas to their attention. Yet, they claim to be “good christian folk” who arrest Rev. William Barber for PRAYING IN THE CAPITAL ROTUNDA!! It is truly unfortunate that our checks and balances have proven to be so weak because of the weakness and fear of elected officials! We are waiting to see what the ass-kissing, I am not accountable to anyone Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito do to convince the conservative majority of the Supreme Court to abandon their oaths of office and bow down to Trump and the Project 2025 people/agenda so Thomas can keep getting paid by his rich white benefactors. He wants to outlaw gay marriage again, what do you think he would say about revisiting the Loving Decision which made inter-racial marriage legal in all 50 States? You know the MAGA Crowd really hates this decision as much as they do gay marriage because embedded in MAGA is the Klan, those southerners who have made “the south will rise again” a reality in the starkest terms.
In this moment, given what is happening in the US, in Israel, in Hungary, in Ukraine, it is imperative that We the People take the cotton out of our ears and put it in our mouths so we can hear the call, witness these “outrageous presumptions” being carried out in our names, and respond to what is being asked of us. We the People are being begged to both witness and testify to the true nature of humankind, the true nature of the universe; to stand up and swear on our good names that wonder and reverence are the only ways to grow in being human instead of being our lower selves, our selfish, egotistical selves who give into and relish in “outrageous presumptions”! It is our mitzvah, our honor to help people find the “wonder and reverence” in their lives, to understand our “destiny to is to aid, to serve” as Rabbi Heschel says elsewhere. We the People have to re-invigorate, re-generate the basic goodness of every human being, we have to appeal to and re-educate people to the call of the divine, the call of our higher consciousness to “Choose Life”, to “love your neighbor as yourself”, to “proclaim freedom throughout the land to all its inhabitants therein”, etc. We the People know that only through wonder and reverence, through radical amazement and a new pair of glasses can we discern truth from fiction, love from hate, and live into the uniqueness each one of us is born with.
I have lived with “wonder and reverence” these past 37+ years and when I forget to, it is disastrous! Either I cause a disaster to happen or one comes at me like a tornado. Living into the “wonder and reverence” I have learned to lean into, doesn’t stop the tornados, it just gives me better responses to them rather than be an opposing tornado! Every time I am the opposing tornado, the damage is devastating to me and to those I love. I Living in wonder is my T’Shuvah. God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark
